Temporary (emergency) Registration Available

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, CMBC has made Temporary (emergency) registration available to Non-practising registrants, former registrants and practising midwives in other Canadian jurisdictions.

In accordance with section 53 of the CMBC bylaws:

  • Temporary (emergency) registration is solely for the purpose of providing assistance during an emergency situation declared by the CMBC Registrar.
  • A Temporary (emergency) registrant must not attend a birth as the principal midwife, or as a second midwife, unless the registrant holds current certificates in neonatal resuscitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency skills.
  • Temporary (emergency) registration may be granted for a period of up to 90 days and renewed for one or more additional periods of up to 90 days if the Registrar’s declaration of the emergency situation continues to be in effect.

Temporary (emergency) registration will be granted to individuals who meet the criteria outlined below.

Current Non-practising registrant

  • is in good standing
  • meets current clinical experience requirement

Former registrant

  • was in good standing before unregistered
  • meets current clinical experience requirement

Practising midwife in other Canadian jurisdictions

  • is in good standing in the jurisdiction(s) where they are registered
  • has no practice restrictions, limitations or conditions

All applicants must have a criminal record check within the past five years and professional liability insurance coverage, arranged through the Midwives Association of BC, for registration.

All fees including application and registration will be waived as long as applicants are able to describe the need identified in their community/area of practice with regards to the pandemic crisis and how their return to practice will help meet that need.
